100% natural, long lasting and safe to ingest.
Our Cowhides are always sourced fresh from the slaughter house.
We only take hides that were processed that morning, before they are treated with any salt brine or preservatives.
How they're processed
The hides are first laid flat on a table and generously salted with 40lbs of food grade rock salt per hide before being stacked on top of each other.
Over the course of 2 weeks, the salt will gradually draw out the moisture from the tissue of the hides.
After a minimum of 2 weeks on the table, the hides are cut into long 12" wide strips and then into individual 10"x12" squares.
These squares are then placed in a low humidity dehydration machine to further dry until they reach the desired moisture level.
Each individual square is power brushed to remove salt and any dried material stuck in the hair. Not everything can be removed so expect to potentially find small amounts of dirt, blood or manure on your hides.
We then drill a 3/4 hole near the top, the bottom corners are clipped, and if needed a nylon webbing loop is sewn on.
Never power washed
At no point are the cowhides power washed or cleaned in any way!
This is intentional, we want our hides to smell and taste as strong as possible.
Dogs prefer stinky hides so that's the way we make them.
Thickness matters most
Thicker sections of hide tend to last longer when being used as a bite target for the springpole.
That's why our Cowhide squares are categorized by overall thickness of the hide.
There are 2 options: Grade A and B
The thickness of a cows hide can vary from animal to animal and also quite significantly between different sections of the same hide.
Grade A are cut from the thicker sections of the hide.
Grade B are cut from the thinner sections of the hide.
Grading has nothing to do with the color, hair length or fat content.
Some hides will have small bits of fat still attached to them, this is normal and they are safe for your dog to ingest.
Due to the nature of this product there will always be variation in the hides that you actually receive. The only guarantee that we can make is that you will always be sent the best choice of the hides that we currently have in stock.
